Abolitionist Place
About Us
CJI is a proud partner of 227 Abolitionist Place, a living monument to America's abolitionist and anti-slavery movement. Initially 227 Duffield Street in Brooklyn NY, the house was a secret meeting place for abolitionists and a crucial sanctuary on the underground railroad in the 1850s and 60s.
The site was scheduled for demolition until a group of activists, including CJI Executive Director Aleah Bacquie Vaughn, organized a movement to save this important piece of abolitionist history. On February 2nd 2021, the house was granted landmark status by the city of New York.
